Gangnam Wings - A Dining Sweet Find (DAY 1)

Having decided to take our "Christmas-vacation-rest-stop" at Holiday Inn Manila Galleria,  I took time to search special dining finds for our family to enjoy.   I guess we had enough of all the fast food joints that's easily within reach.  Please don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with fast food joints... yes, we love them!  But there are times when our palate is seeking out something new... something exciting... something worth discovering.  And guess what!  My searching didn't fail me.  We started our food adventure from DAY 1.

DAY 1 Dinner-Dining-Sweet-Find!

GANGNAM WINGS with it's motto "The way Korean fried chicken should be" is located outside SM Megamall A.  Exact location is at the mega strip, unit 1-114 ground floor building A of SM Megamall.  Even with this information,  I had to ask 2 guards where it is exactly located.  The first guard, doesn't even know the restaurant.  It's a good thing the second guard knew and told me to go outside.  No wonder only a few knew of this place, it's more or less hidden from everybody's eyes.  Although you might say that it's outside and it's in plain view but people pass by it without really taking time to notice.  If I didn't research it myself,  I wouldn't have put an effort to take time out and visit.

Being a crazy-fan of "Koreanovelas", this place is like a bit of a haven for me.  "A bit" because the place where we sat, I'm facing a flat screen tv showing OST song of tv series I've watched and fallen in love!  Haha!!!  Who hasn't watched or fallen in love with Song Joong-ki and Song Hye Kyo's "Descendants of the Sun" or Gong Yoo and Kim Go-eun's "Goblin", these are to name a few.  And yes also alas, they are playing OST songs only... I would have gone gaga over movie clips with OST songs.  Haha!

This Korean restaurant is more on the "Fried Chicken" category restaurant.  If you're craving for local fast food fried chicken but wants it to be different in ambiance and taste, this can be an alternative.  The ambiance is more on the cozy and rustic feel to it.  And for those who are Koreanovela fans like me, have you ever wondered what the chicken taste like when they say in the television series "chicken" "chicken"...?  Well now is your chance to taste it!

After looking through the menu, I had to just try the fried chicken.  By the way, I'm going to make another blog for the entire menu.  I was curious as to how big the chicken was, so I asked the lady server if the chicken are small in size?  She said yes,  that led me to order a dozen chicken thinking small bite size portions will be just right for a small family like us.  But I was surprised when I saw the chicken, they have quite medium portions that 1 or 2 chicken parts will be enough accompanied with rice.  Or maybe we are not that big eaters but for me they were more than enough.  All in all we ordered fried chicken, pancake, kimchi rice, plain rice and of course bingsu.

GANGNAM WHOLE-CHICKEN -
GANGNAM DRUMSTICK CRISPY (Original / Spicy)
"Enjoy the original crunch on your first bite"

We ordered the "Gangnam whole chicken", original because my child doesn't want spicy.  It's a whole chicken chopped into 12 pcs.  Which I belatedly found out.  I could have ordered the 4 pcs. instead.  But anyway,  the chicken were indeed crisp to the bite; soft, tender and juicy in the mouth.  Accompanied with the 3 sauces of soy, sweet chili and spicy... it's a foodie's choice of flavors indeed.  Another alternative to our everyday fast food fried chicken.  Costs about P688.00.

SEAFOOD (PA-JEOM) PANCAKE -
Shrimps, squids, onions, prepared w/ Korean batter mix

The "Seafood (Pa-Jeom) Pancake" was another different experience to the taste buds.  Like the pancake we eat, the ingredients of shrimp, squid, onions and probably leeks or onion leaves are mixed in Korean batter thus giving it the savory taste.  If anyone of you have a taste of the Chinese oyster cake, its more or less closer to that but more thicker.  This is definitely to share.  Costs about P288.00.

KIMCHI RICE
The Kimchi rice was actually good.  I do love Kimchi, it might be an acquired taste for others but the Kimchi rice doesn't have that sour taste that's a flavor of kimchi.  Kimchi and rice actually blends like yin and yang.  I would have finished it if I was not already too full.  Costs about P60.00.

PLAIN RICE
But if kimchi is not your kind of taste,  plain rice would do just fine.  Just looking at it is appealing in itself already.  Costs about P30.00.

MANGO BINGSU -
Mango w/ snowflakes, mango ice cream, mango syrup

And of course, the most awaited dessert... bingsu!  I ordered "Mango Bingsu".  Actually, I first ordered the "Rockmelon Bingsu" but unfortunately it was not available and I opted for "Mango Bingsu" instead.  Frankly, Philippine mango taste way much better than the mango I tasted.  I'm not an expert, but from what my amateur tastebuds could tell, the mango tasted more like apple-mango.  I'm not a big fan apple-mango because the taste doesn't sit well with me.  But the ice cream was vanilla though it says on the description "mango ice cream", it was definitely vanilla ice cream!  The vanilla ice cream was just heaven, creamy and just... yummy!  The snowflake ice with mango syrup complements each other except for the apple-mango.  But nevertheless, for a sweet lover like me... haha... you guess it right, I finished it even with the apple-mango.  Can't bear to let it go to waste.

Just this year they were awarded the "Golden Globe Annual Awards for Business Excellence" and was also featured in an article.  For me and my family, this is definitely one "dining-sweet-find" for us.  It was well worth it!

Christmas 2017 Rendezvous - Holiday Inn Manila Galleria

Hello everyone!  First of all I would like to greet everyone a warm Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!  I know its been a very long time since I last posted my blog.  I got caught up in what you call “stage-mom-fever”.  Stage-mom-fever is what I refer to myself when one cannot stop tagging along one’s child whether in or outside school.  I guess I’m those guilty moms who do that.  So in the spirit of Christmas, I took this chance to spend some time with my family and have a little family-time-rendezvous.

I took time out and plan a little and spend a little more than I should.  Most of the time, I would have booked only deluxe rooms in local hotels thinking that we’d just sleep in it for one night and then leave.  But then again I said to myself, maybe I’d change my plan for once.  Instead I booked a one bedroom suite at Holiday Inn Manila Galleria for 3 consecutive nights.  We had such as a stressful year that we would like to enjoy our stay for once.  So I do hope it’ll be the outcome that we expect.

Holiday Inn Manila Galleria sits at the heart of Ortigas. Within reach of Robinson’s Galleria and a few minutes walk or drive to The Podium or SM megamall.  It is conveniently located to the places where you can enjoy to your hearts content.

I won’t dwell anymore on little chit chats, I’m excited to share to you our one bedroom suite accommodation.  I’m sure you want to know what it looks like.  Though the hotel itself is not that new compared to other hotels but the spaciousness and cleanliness did not fall far behind.  We were assigned room 607.  The room consist of a partitioned room with king size bed, flat screen tv, sofa, coffee table and a study table.  Behind the partitioned room is a small living room and a small dining area.  Near the dining area is where the bathroom area can be found together with the closet.

Ho Chin Minh's Ben Thanh Market

Ben Thanh Market is one of the tourists spots in Ho Chin Minh, Vietnam.  It is famous for its local handicrafts, textiles, souvenirs, local fruits and local cuisine.  Not only is it a large marketplace but it is located in central Ho Chin Minh and is easily accessible.

If you are a big fan of Vietnamese food specially Vietnamese noodles, then this place is the best to visit.  And if your a shopaholic, this place is also for you.  Branded bags, handbags and luggages are all over the place.  North Face and Kipling brands specifically, are the brands widely sold.  These are mostly replicas though some are class A quality replicas.  A keen eye for detail is a must.  And if you are a bargainer then bargain, if you must haggle to get a good price; do it!

It's almost like a a chaotic place because it's surrounded of almost every sort of things you might need, but in a good way.  We could not take in the whole place in one visit, we had to come back another day just to sort out what we are going to prioritize first.  A good thing that Blue Diamond Hotel, our hotel for the whole trip was just literally a short walk away making it easy for us to keep coming back anytime we want.

As we had our leisure walk back to our hotel we can't help but see lots of vendors on their bikes selling fruits.  One of the common sights we see around the city.  Can't help but buy the fruits their selling.  Not to say they are all fresh and really good to eat.

Ho Chin Minh "Vietnamese Water Puppet Show"

One of the first thing we did in Ho Chin Minh was to watch the water puppet show, a traditional art in Vietnam.  We watched the water puppet show at the Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre which is located at 55B Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Dist. 1, Ho Chi Minh City.  The theatre is only a few minutes away from our hotel and I'm glad to say that we walked that few blocks at night in the quiet streets of Ho Chi Minh without the fear of getting mugged.  It was a very nice feeling, of not being overly conscious of myself every time I walk the streets of a new country I'm visiting.

The water puppet show is based on the daily life of Vietnamese farmers such as farming, tending buffalo, rearing ducks, fishing, etc.  It also incorporates entertainment such as children playing, dragon and phoenix dancing, boat racing, etc.  And also showing historical legends of King Le Loi and the restored sword.

The show was certainly very pleasing and entertaining, specially the part when the puppets move together in the same rhythm.  One can only watch in awe.  Since it was the first time we all watched the water puppet show, we were all puzzled at how they could have made the puppets move on water and the most asked question was where were all the puppeteers and where were they hiding.  Questions soon answered as the show unfold.

Dance of four Holy Animals
As the dance of the four Holy Animals marks the end of the show.  The puppeteers who were hiding, have you guessed by now?... they were all hiding at the back behind the green curtain.  They made the puppets move with sticks unlike the usual puppets we all know which were maneuvered by strings.  And yes, they are standing on the water behind the curtain.  It was really amazing how they maneuver these puppets with precision.  It was a skill not an ordinary puppeteer can do.

So here they are, the people behind the spectacular show that we have watched.

The puppeteers
Amazing aren't they?  The only comment I have was that the whole show was in Vietnamese and foreigners couldn't understand the story unless they have the program on their hands.  I could only hope that they do some form of translation.  But hey, who am I to complain, maybe they purposely did this for the audience to experience the authenticity of the show.  Other countries like South Korea and Japan do shows in their own languages too to show its authenticity.  A bit of a hassle for foreigners but whatever their reason, its a must see.

Hope I have whet your interest.  This is one of the things to do in Vietnam!
